For this adventure, I chose a destination that made me dream for a long time: the Spanish Basque Country. Between mountains and ocean, this region offers a perfect balance of grandiose landscapes, rich traditions and culinary delights. For a week, I walked through its emblematic cities, picturesque villages and natural sites, while being seduced by the warmth and authenticity of its inhabitants.
From Bilbao to San Sebastián, passing through the cliffs of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the fortified town of Hondarribia, each stage offered me a unique experience. This trip was much more than a simple getaway: a total immersion in a region where modernity and traditions coexist harmoniously.
I invite you to follow me on this journey through the heart of the Spanish Basque Country, to discover what makes this destination so special.
Bilbao: Between Modernity and Tradition
My journey begins in Bilbao, the capital of Bizkaia, a city that has risen from its industrial ashes to become a vibrant and avant-garde metropolis. The Guggenheim Museum, a true architectural icon, is a must-see. The glittering titanium structure, designed by Frank Gehry, houses a collection of world-renowned modern and contemporary art.
Beyond the Guggenheim, Bilbao is full of treasures to discover. The Casco Viejo, the historic centre, transports you back in time with its winding medieval streets, lively squares and colourful facades. Stroll along the Nervión quays, admire the Arriaga Theatre, a neo-Baroque architectural jewel, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the Plaza Nueva.
Don’t miss out on the famous pintxos, the Basque version of tapas, in the bars of Casco Viejo. These tasty little bites, often presented on bread slices, are a real treat for the taste buds. Bilbao is also famous for its Space Invaders, a fun activity that invites you to discover the city in an original way thanks to a mobile application.
For an ideal stay in Bilbao, plan at least two days and one night. This will allow you to fully soak up the city’s atmosphere and explore its many facets.
San Sebastián: The Pearl of Cantabria
Head to San Sebastián, the capital of Gipuzkoa, an elegant and sophisticated seaside resort, nicknamed the Pearl of Cantabria. The city is famous for its shell-shaped bay, the Concha, lined with golden sandy beaches and dominated by Mount Urgull. I walked along the beach, admired the panoramic view from the top of the mountain and discovered the Comb of the Wind, an impressive sculpture of Chillida that seems to defy the waves.
San Sebastián is also a gastronomic paradise. Its many Michelin-starred restaurants and pintxos bars compete for ingenuity to offer refined and creative Basque cuisine. Don’t miss out on local specialities such as txangurro, kokotxas and Basque cake.
Plan at least two nights in San Sebastián to fully enjoy its unique atmosphere and exceptional gastronomy.
The Monastery of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: A Mystical Site to Cut Your Breath
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a magical place perched on a rocky islet connected to the coast by a winding stone bridge. The view of the Cantabrian Sea is simply breathtaking. Climb the 241 steps that lead to the top of the island, I was able to admire the panorama and ring the church bell three times to make a wish, as is tradition.
Hondarribia: A Journey in the Past
End your journey in Hondarribia, a charming walled town located on the Franco-Spanish border, on the estuary of the Bidasoa. Its old quarter, the Casco Antiguo, is a maze of cobbled streets lined with colorful medieval houses. Visit the Castle of Charles V, transformed into a Parador, a luxury hotel set in historic monuments, and admire the view from its ramparts.
During my walk along the harbour, I watched the colourful fishing boats and savored the peaceful atmosphere of this timeless city. Hondarribia is also renowned for its gastronomy, with many restaurants offering traditional Basque dishes based on fresh fish and local products.
A night in Hondarribia will allow you to discover the authentic charm of this border town.
This week-long trip to the Spanish Basque Country has left me with unforgettable memories. I discovered spectacular landscapes, a fascinating culture and an exceptional gastronomy. Feel free to adapt this itinerary to your desires and your rhythm to create a unique and memorable trip.
